Style, Conventions And Techniques Of Music Videos

In this essay I will explaining and expanding the different styles, conventions and techniques of music video's. I will be showing my understanding of all these point by adding in examples and visual to back up the points. The point of this essay to show my understanding of the styles, conventions and techniques of music video and that I can analysis my own examples and show clear understanding. Some of the music videos I use as examples fall into a few of the different styles.

In-concert and 'as live' footage is is when a music video include the band playing in fount of an
audience. This could be a live performance or be constructed live just for that specific music video. An example of this is Gnarwolves 'bottle to bottle' in this music video they included clips of live performances of the band playing. At the very start of the video they show the band playing at reading and show the audience they were performing to. They then include different clips of different live performances in different locations. In concert is something that is included in nearly all of Gnarwolves videos and is very common when it comes to hard core and pop-punk bands because of the low budget they have to make a music video and keeping the image of the band.

An example of a band that has constructed a live audience for the purpose of the music video is Outkast 'Hey ya!'. This video is set up to show the band is performing on a guest TV show which is 'as live'. But the live performance is set up just for the theme of the video. This is show through the audience being all girls the location and the stillness of the camera and types of shots that are used.

Narrative and interpretive, most music videos use this to create an interpenetration of some of the lyrics within the song. Music video's can use some of the lyric in song or not at all to create a music videos. It can be narrative and the music video can include a story that an audience can follow through that one video. Some bands can continue a whole story through a whole set a music videos. An example of this is the band Fall Out Boy and there album Save The Rock And Roll. They used there whole album to create different music videos that followed one story line this is narrative. Doing this has it's advantage as it gets people excited to see there next music video and increasing the views they have on YouTube not just the download of there music. An example of a song that uses a key lyric in the song to create a whole music video around them few words is Biffy Clyro and their song Biblical. This interprets the lyric 'baby if you could, would you go back to the start' to create a video that follow the lead singer of the band in to different synorison. It shows the singer walking out of a hotel on to the street the first bit of this is him being unkind and second repeat of this is him doing the same actions being kind. The changing point for the second repeat is the lyrics 'Baby if you could would you go back to the start.

Some music videos can be surprisingly unconventional and have few little relationship to the lyrics, these are surrealist/absurdist music videos. This is the of narrative and interpretive. An example of this Coldplay- Adventure Of A Lifetime. This music video has no relationship to the lyrics within the song. Using this type of music video is exciting and different as it doesn't follow the song or any particular story. The Coldplay music video is excited, different and original.

In the 19th central there was a movement that was all about artist showing there emotions through
there art work in stead of just painting the world as it is. This was called impressionism music video's can also show the emotion of the song through the music video this is a impressionist music video. These are music videos that try and capture the tone of the music it's self not the literal3344539345393 meaning of the lyrics. A music video the follows impressionism is Gotye- Someone That I use To Know. This song uses painting to blend the two singers into the back ground. This follows the emotion of the song through art. It captures the sad tone of the song by showing the singers fading into the back ground as they because someone that the other person use to know.

Music videos can also not include the artists in them but be full animated (stop motion, digital). A very famous set of music videos that are all animated are the Gorillaz music videos a British virtual band. In the music videos all the artists where turned into animation charters making there music videos exciting to watch and different. Some music videos my also incorporate animation into there music video.  For example the music for there song feel good inc is fully animated by there music video for there song DARE incorporated animation into there video.

Sometime music videos can reference to other subjects then the song it's self for example songs that are made for a film there music video will incorporate the film into it. This is synergy when clips of the film are included into the music video. An example of this is would be Demi Lovato's music video for the song Let It Go that incorporated clips form the animated film frozen. Mother music videos my include a historical event, person or a cultural referents this is called Allusion. Music videos can be dedicated to other artist to pay respects this is called homage . Homage is normally used when a inflation person has pasted away and other artist was to say thank you for there work. Music videos can also be funny and take the mic out of other things. A pastiche is a light hearted video that imitates another artists stye and if it pokes fun at a subject matter then it's an Pordoy. An example of this is the music video  Fancy but Iggy Azalea. The music video came out in 2014 and it was visual inspired my the american comedy Clueless. In this video they inmates the actors within the film by imitating the same cloths, settting, style. A lot of Iggy Azalea video includes pastiche and parody as they use the styles of other music texts to create a music video

Lip-synch is something more artist in music video have to incorporate. A performance in a music video my included people with in the video miming the lyric so it looks like they are singing along with the track. An example of this is Azelalia Banks music video for 212 this music video include close ups of her lips as she is singing the lyric. They would of filmed this with here mouthing the lyrics and then in the editing process added it along with the track so it all matches together.

Editing is very important when putting a music video together the more memorable a music video is the more circulation it will get, more view and more known the artist will become. Music vidios have becomes such a big thing so each and every music video much be edited as interesting as it could be. Even music videos can challenge the conventions of classic continuity editing. Even editing gets recognized when it comes to music video at the MTV awards there is a section for best editing of a music video. Underneath is the 2016 winners and runners up of the MTV music award for best editing. It states the editor, the song/name of the music video and then the artist the music video was for.

Music videos when edited and be edited to match the beat of the song so on a beat the shot would change to a different shot. This helps to to establish a rhythm of music video and the editing. An example of the is The XX's music video 'On Hold' the editing matches the beat of the song this also changed the pace of the editing due to the song having a slow beat and then speeding up. The editing also speeds up as the beats get quicker and closer together. The two images I have included are two different shot that have changed with in one second on one beat in the song.

Post-production effects can be using for many different reasons to impress the audience for the lasted cutting edge visual effects. The effect you use should suit the genre of the music video. Also by adding in visual effect there is a chance to attract a slightly different audience if the effects are exciting, different and mesmerising. There is also an MTV music award for the best visual effects. One of the video that won was Coldplay's music video for Up&Up this music video has truly used visual effect to the best it could to make a truly mesmerising music video.

Another particle effect that can be used is a split screen effect this is when multiple images of different things are shown on one screen all at the same time. This is non-liner editing and is different to multi-images. A split screen is two shot of one screen changing frequently making to create one music video. A split screen is a very intreating way to make a music video this can also increase view as people may have to watch the video more then once. An example of this is Cassuis's music video for 'Go Up' it have used split screens to connect two different images together. The music video has used the slpit screen to make an artistic, different and original music video.

Another way of editing is chroma key which is when the footage for the music video is shot in front of a green or blue screen and the unwanted block of colour behind it os removed. Then there is a new background/ a new layer that then becomes visible. What better then to use as an example the music video that was set to change editing and use the green screen. Michael Jackson's music video for 'Don't stop 'til you get enough' was released in 1979 and this video was a forefront of a major shift of special effects industry.

Using different camera movements and a range of movements can keep a music video exciting and keep a flow to the video. Nearly all music videos use different camera movement to keep a flow form pans, tracking, tilts and crab shots. The Weeknd's music video for 'Reminder' uses camera movement in nearly every shot to zoom in and our of shots.

As well as camera movement music videos they also use different camera angles and shot types. By using different shot angles and shot lengths a filmmaker can create meaning and tone within a music video or other media texts. Different shots can also show different elements of the mise-en-scene in a music video. A good example of this is the music video for 'Vogue' by Madonna this is a very good example of using different shot angles and lengths to show one mise-en-scene. The music video was directed my David Fincher who used different shot angles and lengths to show different choreographed movements (Voguing) inspired by the 1920 and 1930.

The last technique I going to talk about is mise-en-scene this is very important when it comes to any media text. The mise-en-scene includes props, iconography, costume, colour design, lighting, actors, make up, setting. This all works together with the music to set the mood which normal matches the mood of the music. One of my favourite music videos is Glass Animals music video for Pork Soda this is a happy and upbeat song and this is shown through the light colour design.  This music video is a strange and different video and uses all the code of mise-en-scene to create a fun video with loads to look at. The mise-en-scene is crucial in this music video as the theme is so strange and original that every different shot need to hook the audience. That is also why I love this music video it has been clearly thought out making the music video just as fun at the actual song and artists.
